- Click Inbound Rules in the Advanced Security window’s left pane.
- Click New Rule (in the “Actions” column) on the right pane.
- Select Program and then Next in the wizard box.
- Then, under “This program path,” type the program’s path or click Browse to find the application you wish to block. To continue, click Next.
- Select “Block the connection” on the following screen.
- Select the network profile for which you wish the application to be banned while connected when asked for “When does this rule apply?” If you’re not sure, choose all three Domain, Private, and Public network profiles to prevent the application from running while you’re connected to any of them.
- After that, give this rule a name. It may be whatever you want. The name and description are intended to help you find this rule among the many others that have been added.
- To add the rule, click Finish.
- Return to the Advanced Security window and choose Outbound Rules from the left pane.
- Click New Rule in the “Actions” column.
- Add an outbound rule to restrict the program’s outgoing connections by repeating steps 4 through 9.
After using Windows Defender Firewall to set both incoming and outbound rules to restrict connections to or from an application, that software will no longer be able to connect to the internet.
For a program, only incoming or outbound connections are blocked.
